Fall Julian Assange

Berliner Zeitung

Julian Assange is an Australian journalist, computer programmer, and founder of WikiLeaks, a non-profit organization that publishes secret information and news leaks provided by anonymous sources. He was born on July 3, 1971, in Townsville, Queensland, Australia.

Assange became involved in hacking during his teenage years and started working as a computer programmer in the 1990s. He later became a journalist and founded WikiLeaks in 2006 with the goal of providing a platform for whistleblowers to leak classified information.

Assange gained worldwide attention in 2010 when WikiLeaks released a series of classified US military and diplomatic documents. He was subsequently arrested in the UK on charges of sexual assault in Sweden, which he denied and fought against. In 2012, Assange was granted asylum by the Ecuadorian government and took refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London to avoid extradition to Sweden.

Assange’s situation became a diplomatic and legal standoff, with the UK government insisting that he be extradited to Sweden and later to the US to face charges of espionage and conspiracy related to the publication of classified documents. After seven years of living in the Ecuadorian embassy, he was arrested by British police in April 2019 after Ecuador withdrew his asylum status.

In January 2021, a UK court blocked Assange’s extradition to the US, citing concerns about his mental health and the conditions he would face in US prisons. However, Assange remains in custody in the UK pending an appeal by the US government.
